Remus stood at the edge of the forest near the edge of the lake. He stared across the still water at the castle looming up towards the sky. It was home for him. It was a place where he’d felt the safest even if there were hundreds of students who could have possibly gotten attacked. Yet, no one did and that amazed him. However, he knew that things could have ended up quite differently if there hadn’t been the Shrieking Shack, the whomping willow, or his friends.

How things have changed. He had none of those security blankets. It was up to him to protect himself and others. At least there was the wolfsbane potion. It didn’t cure him, but at least it lessened the symptoms. That was something. Surely it was. Besides, it allowed him to be a mostly active (productive) member of society.

And that was why he was here – being a productive member of society. Since the disappearance of Harry, security at Hogwarts was amped up. For some reason Albus seemed to fear something else would happen – something far worse. How it could be worse and what that could be, Remus didn’t know. The werewolf did not care to ask.

He just took orders. And his orders had been to come to Hogwarts as a sort of security guard. At the very least he was an unofficial security guard. His job entailed wandering around the school and inspecting the grounds. If there was something off, he was to send word immediately. So far there had been nothing.

Rustling happened behind him. With a flick of his wrist, he pulled his wand out. Feet planted apart, he waited. However, he didn’t say anything, yet. If a werewolf, troll, or death eater were coming towards him, Remus knew that silence until further notice would be best.

He was grateful that it was still warm for autumn. Though the fog of dementors was definitely more noticeable nowadays, the grounds at Hogwarts remained blissfully clear for now. He treaded carefully, quietly, and warily. He was a skilled professor, but he was an art Professor. Defense Against the Dark Arts had never been his best subject and now patrolling the grounds felt vulnerable, exposed. Patrolling the castle he could handle, the forest he wasn’t so sure about. But he made his way along the perimeter of the forest towards the black lake as he was told. Duty before comfort, as his Hufflepuff nature dictated. The likeliness of something happening on his patrol was almost slim to none and so it took Drew by complete surprise when he neared the edge of the black lake and found a lone human figure facing the school. Drew stopped and crouched low, examining the figure in the dim moonlight, trying to ascertain any other details that might help him approach and detain the trespasser. It could have been just a student, but Drew did not want to take any chances. Slowly, Drew faded into the trees and made his way around the trespasser to be at his back, careful to keep himself out of sight. He could almost make out the profile of the man, because now Drew could tell it was a man, when his cloak snagged on a shrub and made a loud noise. The figure turned, wand out, and his reflexes were quick Drew noted with apprehension. There were a few tense moments where Drew thought he had been spotted. His heart hammered painfully against his ribcage and he waited a few moments before moving again. This time he hugged his cloak to him as he tried to recircle the man to be at his back. Drew even held his breath, afraid that this strangers hearing would be that good. Once he was behind the man again, Drew stood wand out and crept closer. He wasn’t a master at non-verbal spells and he cursed that fact now. He could sneak up on this man all he wanted but he’d give himself away now. But Duty before Comfort, he reminded himself. “If you so much as move I will curse you into oblivion,” Drew said aloud sounding more confident that he felt. “Lower your wand and tell me who you are and what you are doing here.”
